Continuous Improvement
Teachers, just like their students, should strive to be lifelong learners. In fact, many states require their teachers create and follow professional development plans as a condition of certificate renewal. Whether required or voluntary, the regular accumulation of knowledge and skills will provide greater opportunities for you and your students.

Goal: Goals

Just as with any effective plan, you must start with a goal. Develop a phrase describing your professional abilities five years in the future.

Skills:

Take an honest look at your skills and determine what areas need work in order to achieve your goal. Be prepared to look at the various aspects of your professional life including those related and unrelated to your area of expertise, organizational skills, presentation and listening skills, technology, teaching techniques and personal skills such as stress reduction.

You will want to be specific. Instead of listing computer proficiency, identify what computer skills you will need such as "Learn to Type" or "Learn Java."

Next, list those skills in priority order. Following the priorities you have set, schedule them at the rate of approximately two per year. Set definite beginning and ending dates for each skill.

Once a year, choose how you will acquire or improve the skills you have identified. Choose from a variety of methods including self study, organized courses, discussion groups, mentoring, etc.

Read: Books

Maintain your professional literacy by reading several books a year. Choose books that both complement and challenge your professional philosophy.

Network:

Spend time with peers, business people, parents, administrators and students discussing topics that are relevant to your profession and your own personal growth. Consider developing a short list of questions and interviewing representatives of the groups listed above. Incorporate online networking as well.

Evaluate:

Once a month, assess your progress. Make a note of the techniques that allowed you to succeed and the obstacles you faced. This will allow you to plan more effectively. Once a year, assess your goal and adjust it if necessary.
